12th August Downs Link off-road: a daft day out to the seaside?

If you just want a day out to the seaside this might sound daft. But if you'd like to combine a trip to the beach with a great ride and good company, then you couldn't do better.

We start on Saturday 12th August 2023 at 08:30; meet at the MAIN ENTRANCE to Guildford Main train station. Notify Andrew on email below beforehand so we can be sure not to miss you.

Many thanks to Andy Deeley for planning and promoting this ride.

The route (at ridewithgps.com/routes/41282079) follows the Downs link to Shoreham. There are three options, as explained below. Riders will need to average 10mph on the Full Monty in order to get back before dark. The route is mostly gravel trails along old railway lines, fairly flat, so a bike that can handle light gravel is most appropriate. There are three distance options available, depending on your fitness and keenness:

- The Ice Cream run - Approx 40 mile round trip. Join the main group to the coffee stop at Southwater country park and then make your own way back along the same route.

- The Full Monty run - Main group down and back. Stop at Southwater country park on way down. Bring your own sandwiches for a picnic on the beach and then stop at Southwater country park on return. Total approx 76 miles

- The Sails and Rails run. Group to coast and return by train. You will need to plan your own way home/to Guildford. Stop at cafe on way down and then at the beach. Approx 38 miles
